Is this plant drought tolerant?

Yucca, Agave, Succulents, and Cacti are the only plants we carry that can outlast extended periods without water. The plants listed below are drought tolerant once established, but they are not desert plants. In the event of a dry period they will need to be supplementally hydrated.

Ilex (Holly)                   Does not like to be kept dry, prefers constant moisture.

Juniper                         Does not like to be kept dry, prefers constant moisture. Will scorch in summer if not properly hydrated.

Loropetalum                  Does not like to be kept dry, prefers constant moisture.

Nandina                        Does not like to be kept dry, prefers constant moisture.

Buddleia                         Does not like to be kept dry, prefers constant moisture. Fine in all day sun with proper hydration.

Myrica (Wax Myrtle)      Does not like to be kept dry, prefers constant moisture. Defoliates if not properly hydrated.

Italian Cypress              Does not like to be kept dry, prefers constant moisture. Will splay and discolor if not properly hydrated.

Screening Plants           Will defoliate if not kept consistently hydrated.

Chamaecyparis             Will scorch in summer if not properly hydrated.

Cryptomeria                   Will scorch in summer if not properly hydrated.

Thuja                           Will scorch in summer if not properly hydrated.

Can this plant go in the sun?

True shade plants we have to offer :

  • Hydrangea Arborescens (Smooth)
  • Rhododendron
  • Illicium
  • Leucothoe
  • Mahonia
  • Camellia Japonica
  • Saracocca

The rest can handle more sun with proper irrigation.

Boxwoods               Can handle all day sun, especially when choosing from our robust selection. The more sun exposure boxwoods are allowed, the greater their                                                seasonal color will be. Yes, they would be happier in afternoon shade... But they'll perform just fine in full sun, as long as they remain properly                                            hydrated and are fertilized annually.

Japanese Maples    Can handle all day sun with few exceptions, especially the varieties we carry. The more sun exposure they receive, the greater their seasonal color                                       will be. That being said, the green leaf palmatum varieties would much prefer all day indirect sun or shade as their foliage scorches easily. All                                               other varieties, especially seiryu's, are fine in full sun. Yes, they would be happier in afternoon shade... But they'll perform just fine in full sun as                                         long as they remain properly hydrated.

Azaleas                   Encores and Indica varieties want plenty of sun, but other traditional varieties can also handle all day sun as long as they remain properly                                                    hydrated. The more sun your azaleas receive, the more they'll bloom. Be aware, too much shade will encourage leggy growth and sparse blooms.                                        Yes, they would be happier in afternoon shade... But they'll always look their best with some morning sun.

Rhododendrons      Want only morning sun, with daytime shade rolling in no later than 11am. This plant usually lives in the mountains, but can survive weill in the                                           piedmont region if planted on a fast draining slope with good morning sun, afternoon shade, and proper air circulation around it.

Hydrangeas          The more sun a hydrangea is exposed to, the more fertilization it will require to maintain its appearance. Even with ample water, hydrangeas                                               exposed to all day sun may droop during the hottest times of the year but will perk back up once the sun has set.

  • Serrata (Mountain Lace Cap)        → Morning Sun, Afternoon Shade
  • Arborescens (Smooth)                 → Morning Sun, Afternoon Shade
  • Macrophylla (Big Leaf Mophead)  → Morning Sun, Afternoon Shade
  • Paniculata (Cone Shaped)            → All Day Sun
  • Quercifolia (Oakleaf)                   → All Day Sun

Dogwoods             Cornus Kousa will handle the sun much better than Cornus Florida, but both can thrive in full sun as long as they remain properly hydrated.

Will this plant attract bees?

Many flowering plants are beloved by bees, but some varieties are more notably favored by butterflies. If you're looking to add bloom appeal to your lawn without attracting too many buzzy buddies, consider planting some butterfly garden favorites. Interestingly enough, bees cannot see the same spectrum of colors that butterflies can. Bees are attracted to bright white, yellow, and blue blooms, so you may want to avoid using these colors in your design. Bee-ware of this final tip; Bees and butterflies have different straw-like mouthparts called Proboscis, which are used to draw nector from blossoms. Bees have short Proboscis, while butterflies have very long Proboscis. This is something to keep in mind when selecting flowering plants, as only butterflies will be inclined to drink nectar from long, deep blossoms.

Great Plants for the Butterfly Garden:

  • Buddleia (Butterfly Bush)
  • Butterfly Milkweed (Butterfly Host Plant)
  • Phlox & Sedum (Flowering Groundcovers)
  • Lantana
  • Verbena

Are plant cultivars considered natives?

The real answer is; it depends on who you ask, and it's really a matter of opinion!

In the world of horticulture, the term "Nativar" has been gaining momentum as a means to solve the debate once and for all. Realistically, Nativars are still very similar to the original native plants from which they were bred. These new native cultivars, like any cultivar, are typically bred to increase desirable characteristics and decrease undesirable characteristics. It's a win-win for you and your yard's ecology, choose Nativars!

How long does the bloom last?

Bloom life and length is dependent on several factors, two of the most notable being the plant species and your climate conditions. All plants as individuals have their preferred bloom time or seasonal window. Some bloom only once annually, while others bloom from early spring all the way to first frost. Some flowers only last a day, while others remain beautiful and boasting as the weeks pass on. Feel free to ask an associate for more information regarding the plant you're considering for your yard.

Does it bloom?

The simple answer is: Yes, it blooms!

The truth of the matter is that while most plants do bloom in some form or another, all blooms are not equally showy. All plants bloom in order spread their seeds during a specific season or seasonal window. A Boxwood, for example, has small sparse golden flowers during the cool season. These blooms typically go unnoticed, while a cool-season blooming Camellia is sure to stun with vibrant color and size.
